The Life Force: Portraits from the Amparo & Manuel Foundation

“The body becomes a space where Eros and Thanatos exist in tension. These works hold that complexity—between presence and disappearance, pleasure and instability—and show how intimacy can act as resistance to decay. Within that fragility, the impulse to love, feel, and remain alive becomes incredibly powerful.”
— Tam Gryn

The Life Force: Portraits from the Amparo & Manuel Foundation brings together a selection of large-scale figurative works that examine the body under psychological, temporal, and existential pressure. Presented for the first time in the United States, the exhibition marks a collaboration between the Amparo & Manuel Foundation (AMMA) and the Museum of Sex.

The exhibition engages with the tension identified by Sigmund Freud between Eros and Thanatos—the life instinct and the death drive—considering intimacy as a response to the fragility of life. Aging, rupture, uncertainty, and collective instability shape the human condition. Within this context, the life force intensifies.

Across painting, sculpture, and drawing, figures appear in states of self-reflection and exposure. Nudity operates as vulnerability made visible—an interior condition turned outward. Bodies and environments show signs of fracture, suggesting structural stress beneath surface composure. Intimacy emerges as a space of recognition: being real, being seen, unveiled.

The works emphasize vitality as a central force. Sensuality operates as a form of soft power—subtle, embodied, and persistent. The erotic circulates as presence and connection, particularly in moments when the world feels unstable. In states of fracture, contact deepens; sex becomes a way of holding onto life.

The Life Force continues the Museum of Sex’s exploration of the body and desire as central elements of cultural expression, presenting intimacy as both a personal and collective condition shaped by vulnerability, resilience, and the urgency of being alive.
