Salvador Dalí: Venus and Vulvas
Salvador Dalí’s rather racy prints are up for auction at Swann Auction Galleries. The public auction sale titled “Salvador Dalí: Prints, Drawings & Livres d’Artiste” will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 1:00pm.
Dalí (1904-1989) was a skilled draftsman and best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. Get a sneak peak of what’s going on sale here:
Lot 508: SALVADOR DALÍ, Venus (La Naissance de Venus). Drypoint printed in black on Japon nacré, 1963-65. 495×395 mm; 19 1/2×15 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered X/C in pencil, lower margin. Published by Éditions Argillet, Paris. From The Mythology. A very good, dark impression. Michler/Löpsinger 117; Field 63-3 E. Estimate $2,500-3,500.
Lot 520: SALVADOR DALÍ, La Venus aux Fourrures. Complete set of 16 color drypoints on Japon nacré, 1969. 383×285 mm; 15×11 1/4 inches (sheets), full margins, loose as issued. One of 145 deluxe hors-texte suites on Japon nacré, aside from the portfolio edition of 294. Each drypoint signed and numbered 61/145 in pencil, lower margin. With the Dalí signature blind stamp on each the sheets, lower right. Printed by Etienne-Denis Braillard, Geneva. Published by Éditions Argillet, Paris. Superb, richly-inked impressions with strong colors. Michler/Löpsinger 357-372; Field 68-6.. Estimate $20,000-30,000.
Lot 526: SALVADOR DALÍ, Vulva (Sexe). Pen and black ink, pencil and watercolor on cream laid Japan paper, circa 1970. 350×250 mm; 13 3/4×10 inches. Signed in ink, lower right recto. Likely a study for the same-titled drypoint published by Pierre Argillet, Paris, in 1972 (Michler/Löpsinger 534; Field 72-12; see the following lot). Estimate $12,000-18,000.
